Life as an Azets Apprentice - Elle Seel

Elle Seel, an associate in our Accounts & Business Advisory Services team in Preston answers questions about her career highlights so far and what it’s like to be an apprentice at Azets.

  1. What is your role at Azets?

I’m based in the Preston office within the Accounts & Business Advisory services department. My role involves preparing bookkeeping, VAT returns, statutory annual accounts and management accounts for various clients. I’m currently working from the office but occasionally I get to go out and visit clients. My role also involves training others within my team, guiding them and helping to solve issues.

  1. What benefits do Azets offer?

One of the great benefits is hybrid working. I’m able to start work at 8 and finish at 4, doing my full 7.5 hours per day and getting to go into the office 5 days a week and collaborate with my colleagues.

  1. What advice would you give someone who wants to do an apprenticeship?

Be prepared! Working and studying at the same time is hard. Azets gives you time off for study days and revision days at college but it’s revising in your own time after work and at weekends that’s challenging but definitely worth it.

  1. Why did you choose an apprenticeship over a University course?

The main reason why I chose an apprenticeship over a university course is having  no debt at the end of it.

Choosing an accountancy apprenticeship means that you study at the same time as working. Therefore, you get the experience first-hand whilst also using that knowledge for exams. I remember going to college and being in a class with people that had all been to university, whether that be to study accountancy or not and we were all starting at the same point. Going down the apprenticeship route could potentially mean you are 3 years ahead of everyone else and have no debt, it’s a win win situation!

Many practices and even industry jobs will want you to have some sort of accountancy qualification so being able to study and work at the same time is great as the only other way to get these qualifications would be to fund them yourself.
