Joanne Richardson owns and manages three hospitality venues in Guisborough alongside her father. Their portfolio of cafes and bars includes The Priory Bistro, Badger's Bar and Nellie's Pancake House.

When the opportunity arose for a lease for a coffee shop style unit at the recently built Cleveland Gate development in Guisborough, Joanne snapped up the chance to bring something new to the town's independent hospitality landscape in the form of Nellie's Pancake House.

The family-friendly cafe serves sweet and savoury pancakes alongside sandwiches and desserts.

Nellie's Pancake House was scheduled to open in April 2020, however, the planned opening date fell victim to the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown.

This posed significant challenges when work on the premises had to stop due to supplier delays. Furthermore, because the business had not started trading, they were unable to receive any furlough support, putting the business like many others, through a period of uncertainty.

Tom Gale, Partner at Azets Guisborough, kept Joanne right by providing solid, knowledgeable business advice throughout this period.

Tom and the team at Azets were always on hand to help with information around available grants, such as the self-employment grant and how best to access them, alongside any general business advice as well as tax advice.

Quote Icon Tom is always on hand to provide us with all the tips and information that we need. It's almost like he's our own personal accountant. Any questions we have, Tom answers. He's so proactive and I'm so pleased we're with Azets.

Joanne Richardson, Owner - Nellie's Pancake House

When Nellie's Pancake House finally opened later in 2020, the business traded for seventeen weeks and was an enormous success. The cafe's menu made it an attractive option for families and The Eat Out to Help Out scheme helped ensure a hugely successful opening.

The support from Azets in acquiring available grants helped with the purchase of the third business, Badgers Bar in June 2021.

With business thriving and the right team supporting, Joanne and her father are continuing to expand their business portfolio, with plans now in place to open a second Nellie's Pancake House at a new build site in Northallerton next summer.
