SME Brexit Support Fund - application closing date fast approaching

On 15 March 2021, the Government announced that £20 million would be made available to help smaller businesses to navigate changes to the new trade rules following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU Customs Union.

The SME Brexit Support Fund could provide up to £2,000 in funding (per business) to help with training or professional advice. It is aimed at businesses with up to 500 employees and with an annual turnover not exceeding £100 million.

How can the funding be used?

It can be used to obtain professional advice and training focusing on:

  • how to complete customs declarations
  • how to manage customs processes and the use of customs software and systems
  • specific import and export related aspects including customs, VAT, excise and rules of origin
  • it can also be used towards professional advice fees to enable businesses to understand and meet their customs, excise, VAT or safety and security declaration obligations.

Who can apply?

Businesses which:

  • have been established in the UK for at least 12 months before submitting the application
  • hold Authorised Economic Operator status
  • have met their ongoing tax or customs obligations
  • have no more than 500 employees
  • have an annual turnover not exceeding £100 million
  • import or export goods between Great Britain and the EU.

Businesses must also either:

  • complete (or intend to complete) import or export declarations internally for its own goods, or:
  • use someone else to complete import or export declarations but require additional capability internally to effectively import or export (such as advice on the rules of origin or advice on dealing with a supply chain).

The closing date for applications is 30 June 2021.

Qualifying expenditure has to be made after 11 February 2021. The claim for payment (including evidence of expenditure) has to be submitted within two months of the grant offer being issued, and by 31 August 2021 at the latest. 

The fund is open now, so don’t delay!
