Ashford is situated in the heart of East Kent, the town has been built on the back of industry and agriculture. The Victorians introduced the railway to Ashford and a large steam locomotive works grew at the edge of the town this connection has carried on to the current HS1 Hitachi maintenance facility which is supported supported by the local economy. The area has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its produce, the Ashford Cattle Market is one of the oldest companies in England having been incorporated in September 1856 and they and the agricultural sector remains a key part of the town. With the introduction of HS1 Ashford is now only 38 minutes from the centre of London and less than 2 hours from Paris. It has therefore become a centre for commuters and businesses wanted easy access to the continent.
