The opportunity


At Azets we have a passion for people and ensuring the right person is working on the right job, we are seeking an skilled, enthusiastic Tax Manager to join the growing R&D Tax Service Line.

Azets works with clients of all sizes and scales, from start-ups to large corporates, to assist them in the preparation of claims for Research & Development tax relief. We work with companies across all sectors, including manufacturing, engineering, life sciences, software and digital technologies.

Day to day duties


  • Working with National and Regional Tax Heads to grow the Azets R&D Tax Relief offering.
  • Delivery of R&D Tax client portfolio across the Scotland Region, liaising with local tax teams and directly with clients in the management of R&D Tax assignments.
  • Meeting with clients to discuss the R&D landscape, the legislation, and both their qualifying costs and technical projects.
  • Preparing and reviewing R&D Financial Reports, for inclusion in Tax Returns.
  • Writing technical descriptions of the client’s projects to include in the reports to be sent to HMRC, and also editing client drafted technical descriptions.
  • Ongoing management of the R&D software platform.
  • Reviewing work completed by junior staff for accuracy and completeness, and providing constructive feedback.
  • Development of materials and processes to train and develop trainees.
  • Providing technical support and advice to local offices on R&D Tax issues.
  • Assessing optimal tax positions for clients qualifying for R&D Tax Relief, including utilisation of trading losses, Group relief and cash generation.
  • Involvement in representing clients in HMRC Tax Enquiries.
  • Assisting with marketing and business development activities.
  • Working with National and Regional Heads in delivery of training and webinars.
  • Responsibility for R&D billing process and financial reporting.



What are we looking for?


  • Degree qualified in a relevant area of science or technology
  • Relevant professional qualification, for example CA, ACA and/or CTA. 
  • Proven experience in client handling and managing a busy portfolio.
  • Excellent communication skills in a range of situations, both written and oral.
  • Good client facing skills, and comfortable fronting regular Teams meetings and phone calls.
  • Well organised, with ability to manage and prioritise workloads to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Experienced in preparing and interpreting statutory company accounts and corporate tax computations.
