Chris is a Tax Director, based in the Swansea office, specialising in Research & Development ("R&D"), Patent Box and other Creative Sector tax relief claims. Chris qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2002 and prior to joining Baldwins worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP ("PwC")  in their South Wales region for more than 15 years.  During his time at PwC, Chris worked for the Assurance team for several years before joining the Tax team, specialising initially in Corporate and Personal Tax compliance before developing the R&D, Patent Box and Creative Sector tax relief team, which Chris headed for the South West Wales region.

Chris has extensive experience of working with a range of clients across the South Wales market place, ranging from private clients to International groups, Universities and listed entities. During his time with the PwC Tax team, Chris:

  • Assisted clients in claiming £5 million in R&D tax credits
  • Advised clients on many aspects of Corporate and Income tax reliefs, including submitting significant capital allowances claims, claims relating to share transactions and group specific claims
  • Provided advice on investment related reliefs such as EIS and tax efficient incentive schemes such as the EMI scheme
  • Provided structuring advice for multi million pound corporate deals

In 2017 Chris took up an opportunity to expand his commercial, tax and accounting knowledge by joining a former PwC client, becoming the in-house tax advisor and International accountant for a £200m turnover group based in South Wales.  During his time there Chris:

  • Managed the reporting systems and tax return processes for the International companies and branches
  • Provided structuring advice to help the group take advantage of all available tax reliefs including capital allowances, group relief and Double Tax Relief
  • Provided country specific advice to help reduce excess withholding tax being suffered by the group
  • Agreed Time to Pay arrangements with HMRC
  • Provided advice to help resolve historic HMRC VAT and CIS enquiries with minimal amendments

Before taking up the opportunity at Baldwins Chris gained further experience in Industry by taking up an Interim Finance director role at a newly UK headquartered International civil engineering group with contracted future income in excess of £60m, helping them to set up a group structure and developing reporting systems, forecasting schedules and tax models that will enable the business to move forward efficiently.

Chris is looking forward to using the experience he has gained from Industry and during his time at PwC to help clients understand and evaluate their business tax needs and maximise the tax reliefs available to them.
